DBQ-The Witch Craze

Identify and analyze at least three major reasons for the persecution of individuals as witches in Europe from the late fifteenth through the seventeenth centuries. From the Middle Ages until the 1700s, a fevered witch craze was spread throughout Europe. These witches were isolated, persecuted and when found, tortured and consequently killed. With most of the population concentrated in southeastern Europe, over 100,000 witches were tried. It was believed that these individuals practiced black magic and were associated with the Devil, but a single fact becomes clear when studying the witch craze and that is that there is a certain type of individual that was singled out as a witch. The majority of of accused witches were female(Witchcraft Statistics, doc 2) and mostly over 50 years old(Witchcraft Statistics doc 3). The witch craze concentrated on elderly women who more often than not were from a low social class (Witchcraft Statistics, doc 1. ).A combination of religious beliefs, socia l prejudices and cultural precepts helped heighten the already rampant witch persecution throughout Europe. The witch craze spread throughout the common-people of Europe, this due to a strong support to the persecution of witches advertised by influential religious leaders. Although Europe was in a state of religious turmoil due to the warfare between Catholic and Protestant faiths, Catholics and Protestants alike contributed to the spread of the witch craze. Martin Luther preached that â€Å"sorcerers or witches are the Devil’s whores who steal milk†¦torture babies in their cradles†¦ † (Religious Opinions, doc 3). John Calvin, another influential religious leader said â€Å"†¦ We are therefore taught by these examples that we have to wage war against an infinite number of enemies†¦ †(Religious Opinions, doc 4). Pope Innocent VII, issued â€Å"The Witch Bull† in 1484 where he stated it was the peoples duty to get rid of witches and he gave inquisitors the right to â€Å"exercise their office of inquisition and to proceed to the correction, imprisonment and punishment† of witches(Religious Opinions, doc 4).The strong religious belief that witches were instruments of the Devil and that it was society’s duty to eliminate them, along with the confusion and anger that was brought about by the Catholic-Protestant conflict was a contributing factor to the persecution and killing of many witches. While the preachings of influential leaders against the witches was a main factor of this witch craze, the fact that witches were women was an important factor within the faith. For centuries women within the Catholic church were seen as inferior to men and more susceptible to sin. Both the Protestant and Catholic leaders believed that women, specially elderly women were and easy pray for the devil’s deeds. â€Å"The Hammer of Witches† a witch-hunting manual created by Dominican monks they stated that women are more likely to be witches because they are more â€Å"credulous, impressionable and passionate†(Religious Opinions, doc 1).Once again due to the longstanding discrimination against women within the Catholic faith, the monks were probably heavily influenced by their faith which led them to speak so badly of women. The social prejudices held by European society about women made it easier for the persecutors to pinpoint them as lesser, crazy and most of all guilty. The belief that women, specially elder women were weak and inferior is an important factor to understand why they became the target group for witchcraft charges. The thought that elderly women were impure and more corrupt was spread by the lawmakers that made links between the physical body and witchcraft. A legal conference that took place in 1618 announced that â€Å"The bodies of aged persons are impure, which when they[become diseased with] malice† are used by the Devil to carry out his evil deeds( Scientific Opinions, doc1). This shows a clear societal prejudice against old people, specifically older women, but not everyone agreed there was a link between age and corruption.Belgian physician Johan Wier, while still showing disdain towards women and asserting their inferiority with their â€Å"melancholic nature and small brains†, concludes that although women were prone to depression the causes of their diseases were hardly supernatural(Scientific Opinions, doc2). Although not all society was convinced about the existence of witches, the fear and prejudice against older women was a contributing factor to the persecution of this specific group. The last, and probably greatest factor, that contributed to the fever of witchcraft was the fact that the European culture was characterized by strongly superstitious beliefs. The belief that witches could control men and do a variety of spells, is derived from the belief in the supernatural that most of the European population ha d. Thomas Ady, as describing the feelings of an English householder explains that â€Å"†¦ he cryeth out of some poor innocent neighbor that he or she hath bewitched him(Testimony of Accused Witches and Eyewitnesses, doc3).The testimony of a licensed midwife at Dillingen, Germany confessed her â€Å"witchcraft† and admitted that â€Å"she often had a good roast or an innocent child,†¦ kill young infants at birth† (Testimony of Accused Witches and Eyewitnesses, doc1). The report of Churchwardens in Gloucestershire England, reported that â€Å"†¦ Alice Prabury in our parish that useth herself suspiciously in the likelihood of a witch, taking upon her not only to help Christian people of diseases†¦ †(Testimony of Accused Witches and Eyewitnesses, doc4).All of these documents have in common the belief in evil women guided by the devil to preform witchcraft and unexplainable and horrible deeds such as eating young children, or bewitching young me n. The fact that these happenings were not only attributed to the supernatural, but where held as completely true, show the superstitious beliefs that so many held during the witch craze. These accusations were so serious that even those who were not guilty of anything ended up making delusional confessions in the midsts of torture. The beliefs were held as such truth that these innocent individuals would most likely by the end of their torture end up believing what they were charged with. â€Å"Some call me witch†¦ this they enforce upon me; and in part Make me to credit it†, cites the poem â€Å"The Witch of Edmonton†(Testimony of Accused Witches and Eyewitnesses, doc5). â€Å"Innocent have I come into prison, innocent have I been tortured, innocent must I die† wrote Johannes Junios to his daughter, clearly showing that many of these accusations were completely false(Testimony of Accused Witches and Eyewitnesses, doc 7).The combination of social prejudices , religious beliefs and cultural precepts helped spark the fire of a European witch craze that lasted over a century and claimed thousands of lives. The main target of this witchcraft were poor elderly women who were easy to dispose of due to years of hatred, superstition and discrimination. The European witch craze is a frightening example of how easily mankind is corrupted by hatred and prejudice and is lead to leave behind any sense of compassion, decency and rational thinking. While modern day â€Å"witch hunts† have been left for the movies and books to recreate, a great deal of prejudice still exists in the society we live in. The targeting of certain â€Å"weaker† groups by a â€Å"stronger† majority sadly remains a part of 21st century society. The reality of human society is that hardly anyone is willing to go through the excruciating process of admitting they are wrong, or realizing that things like gender, age, skin-color or religion are not to be used as an excuse to harm others.

Media Manipulation

There are certain negative roles of Pakistani media . Medal Is negatively manipulating the Interests of the people. The idea of creating and selecting the kind of information we wish to enrich ourselves with has steadily become more attractive as of late. With such a dynamic flow of information happening around the globe, North Korea somehow stands out in its shelter.. We, as a eastern society, on the other hand are exposed to various kinds of information on a daily basis.Up to 3000 advertising messages per day to be precise. We cannot walk around a block without being attracted to buy a certain product, use form of service, or have a particular view. There is an absolute abundance of options. But are we really free to choose? Who is it to say that our source of information does not choose our information for us? Are we, despite having freedom of choice, not at all This idea formed the basis of our selected topic of research and led to the exploration of truth manipulation in the current media landscape.AIMS & OBJECTIVES Firstly to create awareness amongst the public about techniques employed by media corporation to spin truths and push their political and social agendas and opinions upon s ociety. Then to equip the audience with necessary means in order to defend themselves against truth manipulation in the current media landscape. This is a demoralizing factor in today's society, as society puts a certain amount of trust into the media and hope that what they are delivering is authentic and unaltered information rather than issues that have been fictitious to benefit secondary needs. This is where the public are being misled. What is needed to overcome these troubling issues is a raise in public awareness. Propaganda and truth manipulation must be exposed so the public are able to see that the information they receive is not necessary the whole truth. Once this occurs, e as a society will be better equipped to form our own opinions, and perhaps even regain some power over media giants. Grassroots is where this movement must begin and it is our aim to assist such a cause. RESEARCH METHODS This project cente rs around research and investigation. In order to absorb and analyze as much information as possible on the chosen topic of truth manipulation, we have decided to employ several vastly different research methods. Initial investigation began by conducting a ‘cultural probe'. This method is a first- hand data gathering attempt. The exercise involved using five people to participate in series of news, media and communication related activities. The aim of this method is more about gathering inspiration than information. The outcomes and results of this method are outlined below in the section entitled ‘Cultural Probe Results'.Secondary research took the form of a literature review, as included on the following pages. Each group member selected or was assigned a series of literature and information sources to investigate and report. Sources included documentaries, films, publications, Journals, articles, case studies and electronic resources. Both global and local issues were explored. This form of research aided a better understanding of our topic, and helped us form individual and collective opinions of the issues arising. The outcome is the following argumentative essay. At the point of writing this research proposal, third and fourth methods of investigation are being discussed. Further primary methods such as surveys, questionnaires and focus groups may be used to further enhance our learning and knowledge. User testing will be used during the design development stage to determine if the target market are receptive to any developed outcomes. Major meal corporation's use tenet power Ana meal outlets to portray an oaten hidden political or social agenda. To do so they spin and manipulate truths, molding information to suit their cause.Authenticity of information is lost owing to this trend, and it has become increasingly difficult for the public to separate fact from fabricated fiction and false, misleading information. The media has a role to portray true and relevant information and so serve public interest. This idea is seemingly lost on many media giants who are more focused on profit and swaying opinion than delivering a realistic and reasonable account of rent affairs and issues. This goes against the Journalistic promise to honor societies right to true and honest information.

Team Development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Team Development - Essay Example There are both demonstrated advantages and disadvantages associated with multicultural teams (Stahl, nd). The goal ought to be to emphasize the advantages while at the same time making organizational adjustments to better understand the disadvantages and thereby convert them into advantages. As an initial matter, multicultural teams generate more creativity. Team members have more experiences, more background facts to draw on, and more information to contribute to the team. This creativity results in a critical analysis of problems rather than a mere acceptance of previously-accepted norms. Precise definitions become important. There is, in a short, an inherent need in the diversity context to analyze and to clarify more completely than in a non-diverse environment. Team building, as a result, becomes a more thoughtful and analytical process. These contributions manifest themselves in very useful ways. Problems are presented, defined, and a broader spectrum of alternatives proposed. The potential disadvantages are real, and have been empirically established, but can also be converted into team building advantages. There are issues, for example, of mistrust and a lack of cohesion in some multicultural settings. Stereotypes and issues of bias may present themselves as obstacles. Some of these problems are rather straightforward.

Literary theories Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words

Literary theories - Essay Example (Rivkin & Ryan 2004) Feminist thought and practice analyzes the production of literature and literary representation within the framework that includes all social and cultural formations as they pertain to the role of women in history. Feminist literary theory is multifaceted and dynamic. It is often described merely as the use of feminist principles and techniques to evaluate the textual constructions of gendered meaning. But feminists definitions of gender and of feminism are constantly changing and evolving. Literary theorists have adopted and transformed these definitions, and created an increasingly complex field of study. (Keating, 2002) 1. Bourgeois: Virginia Woolf asserts that women have not been able to write because of the prevalent social conditions that acted as a barrier between them and writing. The Madwoman in the Attic is a seminal work in feminist literature theory. Here Gilbert and Gubar agree with Woolf in her view that women writers of the nineteenth century were restricted in their writing to create their female characters either to personify the ideal woman (angel) or the deviant new woman (monster).(Gilbert &Gubar, 1979) as it was taboo for women to write in the nineteenth century it may be construed that feminist writers were regarded as an aberration of true feminity (angel) or a "madwoman" Gilbert and Gubar asserted that women writers should strive for an identity beyond this type of patriarchal dichotomy. 2. Social or Marxist feminism: This was advocated by Simone de Bouvoir. In her book The Second Sex, Bouvoir stated that social equality between the sexes would result in giving power to women. This would also enable them to create literature of their own. As a socialist feminist she attacks the traditional stereotyping of women in male narratives. 3. French Feminism: This includes a group of feminists including Irigaray who believe that women writing should be drastic in its nature.Luce Irigaray agrees with the French

The Whiskey Rebellion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

The Whiskey Rebellion - Essay Example After the American Revolution the nation suffered unsettled economic conditions and a severe depression. Paper money was in circulation, but little of it was honored at face value. Most of those who were harmed by the depression were property-less and thus unable to vote. In Massachusetts the "sound money" merchants and bankers men controlled the government. The quarrel grew until thousands of men in the western counties of Massachusetts rose in armed revolt. They were led by Daniel Shays (1747-1825), a captain during the American Revolution. Shays' Rebellion lasted from August 1786 to February 1787. The agitators objected to heavy land and poll taxes, the high cost of lawsuits, high salaries of state officials, oppressive court decisions, and dictatorial rulings of the state senate. In Northampton on August 29 the mob succeeded in keeping the courts closed so debtors could not be tried and put into prison. Fearful of being tried for treason for this action, Shays and his men broke up the state Supreme Court session at Springfield the following month. The revolt took a more serious turn when Shays and a force of 1,200 men returned to Springfield in January to capture the arsenal. Action by the national government prevented the attack on January 25. Most of the insurgents were captured in early February, ending the rebellion. The leaders were condemned to death for treason but were later pardoned. Shays himself later received a war pension for his service in the American Revolution. Shays' Rebellion was one of several disturbances in different states. It hastened the movement for a federal government strong enough "to ensure domestic tranquility," as stated in the preamble to the Constitution, which established the United States. And this Constitution broughtthe first use by the new federal government of its constitutional power to uphold the government of each state, as the Whiskey Rebellion broke out. Western Pennsylvania had a history of wanting to be separate. As early as 1775 the Transylvanians petitioned the Continental Congress to be recognized as the fourteenth colony. In 1776 the people in the region claimed by both Pennsylvania and Virginia, announced that they were the new state of West Sylvania. They said that "no country or people can be either rich, flourishing, happy or free . . . whilst annexed to or dependent on any province, whose seat of government is . . . four or five hundred miles distant, and separated by a vast, extensive and almost impassible tract of mountains . . ." On January 15, 1788, Lord Dorchester, the governor-general of Canada, sentJohn Connolly (previously in charge of Ft. Pitt) to Western Pa. to talk to General John Neville, General Samuel Parsons and other Pittsburghers sympathetic to the British cause to determine the likelihood of the West separating from the East. After receiving the report Dorchester then send a letter to Lord Sydney advising him to aid the West in separating from the Union. Indians led by the Britishraided the Pennsylvania areas west of the mountains. The United States sent two major military expeditions against the eastern Indians. The first, in 1790, was led by General Josiah Harmer and the second, in 1791, was led by General Arthur St. Clair. Both expeditions were defeated by the Indians! It wasn't until 1794 that General Anthony Wayne defeated the British at Fallen Timbers and the British actually withdrew from the region, giving up on any hope of claim to the areas west of the

Why Japan should be allowed to continue whaling Essay

Why Japan should be allowed to continue whaling - Essay Example Therefore, the following discussion aims at highlighting the different reasons that should encourage the continuity whaling in Japan. The Japanese community has always engaged in whale fishing, since the early days. The whaling fleets usually depart from the country twice annually. They head to the southern ocean sanctuary in November, where they hunt minke whales. In May, the fleets visit the Northwest Pacific to hunt different species of whales. These include minke, bryde, fin whales, sei, as well as sperm whales. Once the fishers get the whales, they process the meat, and return home with the finished product ready for consumption (Cunningham, Huijbens, & Wearing, 2012). Consequently, the activity forms a large part of the Japanese culture as it outlines the activities done on an annual basis. More to these, whaling perpetuates a sense of nationalism amongst the people, given its domestic origin. The community prides itself in the practice, as it has no western influence, unlike other activities that were introduced by colonialists. Therefore, the activity bears a long history in the country, and needs to be pr otected to maintain the culture of the people. This follows the need to pass on traditions and practices that characterize a given culture to future generations. Unlike the international community that views whales as mammals that need to be protected from extinction, the Japanese view whales as fish (Miller, & Dolsak, 2007). Consequent to this, the culture of the Japanese community believes that whales serve the significant purpose of food. Just like some communities feed on cows as a source of food, and others give it a sacred status, so does Japan see whales as a type of fish. Therefore, inhibiting whaling in Japan can be seen as a form of cultural imperialism as it interferes with their beliefs. The country should emphasize on preserving its beliefs,

Potential essay question Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Potential question - Essay Example Franklin Mall conducted a study which showed that race is a creation of the human psyche; it is not inherent in us. Stephen Gould stated that we should view race as just part of our outward appearance because it defines very little aspects of our lives (Jurmain and Kilgore 23). The relationship between anthropology and colonialism is uneasy because anthropology disagrees with the colonialist perspective that some races are inferior to others (Jurmain and Kilgore 24). In British and French colonies, anthropologists were used to spread the message that the colonialists were superior to the â€Å"natives.† Evans-Pritchard felt that anthropologists should be actively involved in policymaking, but Malinowski was of the opinion that involvement in policymaking dilutes the impacts of anthropology (Jurmain and Kilgore 26). Development is anthropology’s evil twin because it uses fallacious claims to advance the interests and influence of some races over others. Development is a mirage created by racial supremacists. Applied anthropology is incredibly wide and therefore requires intensive research in order to understand its application. In addition, applied anthropology requires a lot of time to master because it comprises several sub-disciplines that can create confusion (Jurmain and Kilgore 13). Finally, most people have a problem differentiating applied and theoretical anthropology because they overlap in so many ways (Jurmain and Kilgore 13). The debate about anthropology and the four-fields of anthropology centers on the application of anthropological principles in an ethical and holistic manner. Anthropology has worked in medicine, genetics, engineering and philosophy. New areas include biological and quantitative research. The spring lancet is an example of a product created by anthropologists. It was designed in the 18th and 19th centuries to help in the drawing of blood and fluid samples for analysis (Jurmain and

Proud to Be a Malaysian Essay Example for Free

Proud to Be a Malaysian Essay I am proud to be a Malaysian because of so many reasons. Firstly, Malaysia is surprisingly beautiful. We have beautiful islands and also the biggest caves in Southeast Asia. Not only that, Malaysia has the tallest twin tower in the world (KLCC). We also have the highest and the longest canopy walk in the world in more than 100 million years old of the tropical rain forest (Taman Negara). Forests are well preserved and the wildlife here is abundant with many protected endangered species. Besides that, Malaysia has modern and efficient public transportation with different types of train, taxis and the best airport in the world, KLIA. Our Malaysia Airlines won the Best Cabin Crew Awards a few times. Malaysians are really friendly and understanding. In my opinion, the most beautiful thing in Malaysia is our variety of culture, belief, and the scrumptious food. We are unique, as we can still get along well even though we’re a multi-racial and multi-cultural country. There are the indigenous tribes, Malays, Chinese and Indians but we get along like close siblings. We also have the freedom of religion and equality in education, which is good. There are also many languages spoken by all Malaysians, the famous one being ‘Manglish’ (Malay + English), and the most famous word being ‘lah’. Malaysia is really truly Asia because of its unity in diversity that can be seen in the various festival celebrations by all the races in Malaysia. Therefore, we have many public holidays, which I’m sure we all love. Also, these festive holidays are participated in by all Malaysians, we usually have open houses whereby everyone is invited to attend, regardless of their background. When it comes to food, there is no other place in the world that can be compared to Malaysian food. It is obvious as we have different races and 14 states where every state has its own specialities. The Malaysian food is so diverse and yummy that the main reason why I wouldn’t migrate to another country is because of the food here. Aside from the traditional sports like wau, gasing and sepak takraw, Malaysia takes part in popular sports such as bowling, badminton, football, hockey and squash. The world number one for badminton, Lee Chong Wei, is from Malaysia, so is the world number one for squash, Nicol David. Because of Malaysia’s location, it is free from natural disasters, the worst we experience is the annual flash floods during the monsoon seasons and also the earthquake tremors from neighbouring countries. Malaysia also has cheap petrol, which explains the number of cars people own here. Even though the government subsidises the cost of petrol here, we have the cheapest petrol rates in Asia. Malaysia may not be great, but Malaysia is my home, and thats more than enough of a reason to love it. Even if we can’t compare to other countries, â€Å"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush†.

Strategic Role of Budgeting in Health Context

Strategic Role of Budgeting in Health Context Purpose / rationale of budgeting in hospital The traditional purpose of budget have a diagnostic role in measuring and monitoring accounting and hospital performance. Every unit within the hospital will require resource in order to operate and deliver services. The purpose of budgeting in the hospital is to ensure its performance and goals and objectives are achieved at the district and state levels. The strategic plan is the basis of the budgeting, the strategic role of budgeting in health care include driving strategic changes to make suitable with the budget set in order to generate high performance (Abernethy Brownell 1999). In Department of Health (2016) Budget 2016-17 stated that the strategic role for the budget is to ensure the health care is both accessible, affordable and the level of health care quality is also sustainable into the future. IHPA (2011) suggested that hospital funding and budgeting is based on the calculation of weighted population and on activity volume performed in an expression of National weighted activity unit (NWAU). Budgeting in the hospital context taken account the activity volume, the budget and funding received is pre-determined fee that reimbursed per activity based on the diagnosis related group (DRGs) (IHPA 2011). Commonalities between Activity Based Funding (ABF) principles and Strategic role of budgeting is the revenue and funding generate is link to patient activity. ABF principles help to create the strategic plan that reflects the hospitals development by volume of service (Eagar 2011). Activity based funding is a patient evidence based budgeting tool to understand the health care cost by episode of care or performance processes (AIHW 2014). It promotes price harmonisation and has the strategic role in supporting decision included costing and measurement potential health care delivery improvement initiatives (Eagar 2011). Where when the current resources allocation is not sufficient within the budgets, a strategic plan will need to be create and modify the budget and resources allocation to achieve the target and goals. Advantages of budgeting in ABF ABF provide efficiencies of the performance in hospital care and improve sustainability of hospital service provision (AIHW 2014).ABF promote best practice and have the advantage to put unmeasurable activities into number values, provide a more accurate picture of profitability and efficiency measure (Eagar 2011). ABF have the advantage to cover and measure value with a different characteristic and in a multi-product environment. The funding methodology create a clear picture include the complexity of the activity that attracts costs to support management in making decisions (Cohen et al. 2012). ABF in budgeting help to address services agreement objectives such as patient care base costing help reduce wait list, activities against peers will encourage competitions to enhance hospital quality and cost efficiency (Sutherland, Repin Crump 2012) Disadvantages of budgeting in ABF Cohen et al. (2012) suggested some disadvantage adopting ABF in budgeting include the high cost associated with the implementation of this budgeting structure. The requirement to ensure accurate budget forecast in ABF involve the large amount of comprehensive data and information to be reported. The disadvantage adopting ABF involve the data not readily available to the cost require to implement this method in data collection. Another disadvantage involves the use of DRGs in calculating the cost of activity may not be fully reliable (Mihailovic, Kocic Jakovljevic 2016). This suggested that adopting ABF in budgeting may incurred financial incentive of provision in unnecessary care due to increase in activity volume (Cohen et al. 2012). The complexities in budgeting to enhance forecast accuracy Hospitals have very complex revenue and funding structure from grants received from commonwealth, revenue generated from medical invoicing; donations receive from individual parties and other budgetary allocations (Department of Health 2016). The goals must be in measurable units, direct and attainable to enhance forecast accuracy (Eagar 2011). It is important to allow appropriated participation level in the budgeting to ensure an accurate and timely in the forecasting process in budgeting. Authoritarian prepare budget from the top down level as an overhead. The budgeting will include the use of capital and other fix asset to enhance the accuracy in forecasting (Mitton, Dionne Donaldson 2014). Participatory measure will allow cost centre managers to identify specific activity and resources such as full time employee to enhance forecast accuracy (Tanaka 2007). Cost centre managers will have the ability to identify difference expense related to their unit where upper management may no t have the ability to. The complexity in budgeting exercise will consider the inclusion of large and small volume of activity cost that include utility cost, human resources cost, clinical cost and other related operational cost (Mitton, Dionne Donaldson 2014). The level of detail will need to be achieving at the right level to facilitate timeline-ness and accurate allocation of resources. (ii) The forecasting of 5percent growth in cost and 10 percent growth in the activity from previous year is not suitable for the organisation. Reversing the forecasting method will be more suitable with the cost on a 10 percent growth and activity on 5 percent growth to ensure the hospital will achieve the target. This forecasting model has adopted the incremental budgeting method (Bragg 2014). It is a simplified budget method to perform a forecast base on the previous years budget and applied the percentage difference to the following year (Bragg 2014). This method is not efficient as it does not examine the hospitals expenditure and activity to achieve the forecasting result. Where the zero base budgeting will allow the hospital to determine expenses according to the activities and associated cost by clinical streams (Rosin 2015).This approach to budget required hospital manager to start from zero and force managers to justify the reason of expenditure and assess benefit of the spending every year (Bragg 2014) . Adopting the zero base budgeting will support the funds allocation in a more cost efficiency approach. Hospitals face multiple challenges on health care cost such as the changing funding structure and the population growth that triggers inpatient volume. The zero bases budgeting approach will support hospital to redesign allocation of funds and resources distribution, to enhance accurate financial budget forecast and maximise benefit and strengthen capabilities (Rosin 2015). (iii) YTD 2015/2016 Actual YTD 2015/2016 Budget Variance Total Activity volume 28000 30000 -2000 Total Cost $124 M $124 M The table above is under performance, it is not achieving the target. The cost in the above does not attract enough revenue from the volume of activity. There is a variance of -2000 in the actual activity volume against budget. Implication of performance organisational financial in revenue and cash flow Analysis of variance from the budgeted figures from different perspective, rate, price, cost (Zelman et al. 2013). The above table provide information to support analysis of variance and the hospitals performance. The reason to analysis the variance so performance can be enhance by identify financial trends and threats, as well as identify any opportunities to achieve hospital objectives (Zelman et al. 2013). Variances between budget and actual cost will lead to adjusting business strategies to achieve goals. Variance and cost of unit per activity volume will help hospital maintain the control over the hospitals expense by monitoring the actual verse budget (Singh Wheller 2012). Assuming the funding model is ABF in a hospital, because organisation has lower activity than the budget and funding allocation is base on the activity level. In this instance, hospital will receive less revenue as its target (IHPA 2011). Funding received will have shortfall against the budget from various sources include government, state and insurance companies (NSW Health 2016). Reduction of the revenue is going to impact the current financial statement result in a lower cash flow. The actual minus budget is unfavourable as the cost of service per activity unit is with a higher cost. Reason of the variance may include changes in admission level, cost of medical equipment or medicine or changes in labour cost (Zelman et al. 2013). Implication of underperformance will reflect in the financial statement as deficits for the year. The income such as health services funding, user charges, grants and other capital gain minus the expenses such as employee expenses, supplies and services a nd loss of investment will give the total cost (Zelman et al. 2013).. Hospital managers will use financial statements to make changes in financial forecast and prompt to reallocate resources to ensure a stronger control of revenue and maintain health care cost. Implication of performance in hospital acute patient services The underperformance in activity volume in this scenario indicated the service cost per activity unit are higher than budget (IHPA 2015). The scenario suggested the treatment provided was more expensive than forecast. The activity volume is also lower than forecast. This may suggest the activity volume in this year had used more input (IHPA 2015). Sometimes the underperformance of activity may due to unpredictable events such as natural disasters that result in increase of sudden increase of emergency admission that result in expensive health care cost. Other reason mat take into consideration may included, the hospital have complete more complicated cases (Dong 2015). The cost of treatment is more expensive and used more resources than usual. In addition, beds were occupied for longer days due to increase of length of stay and cannot accept additional patients hence reduce hospital activity. When health care cost could not generate enough activity, the implication in acute patients services may include decrease in quality of health care service activity (Damian Everhart et al. 2013). The increase of cost will suggest the less generation in funding and with a tighter budget next round. Hospitals with a tighter budget may not be able to purchase new equipment, do any new renovations and unable to recruit more staff (Dong 2015). All these are derive from the performance in hospital patient services. The reduction in revenue will result in nursing staff patient ratio to be increase to reduce cost of activity (Damian Everhart et al. 2013). There will be a potential in significate decrease in the quality of health care delivery. Strategic issue on service agreement It is important to ensure KPI are performance according to the services agreement. Currently the SLHD services agreement has two tiers of KPIs require hospital to perform on (NSW Health 2016). Tier 2 are less important as Tier 1 performance indicators are link very closely to funding and have financial impact in hospital operations (NSW Health 2016). Tier 1 indicators are the main driver and determine the funding hospitals will receive in the next year (IHPA 2015). It is very important to ensure financial sufficient and be sustainable to ensure efficient hospital operation. In a financial point of view, hospitals will generate more funds because the resources are fully utilise and being cost efficient (Zelman et al. 2013). Tier 1 KPI have a strong strategies focus in better patient care include achieving zero waitlist measure, achieving surgery admission within urgency categories timeframe and increase focus on quick emergency admission base on triage categories (NSW Health 2016). Ti er 1 KPI also include financial performance measures such as 100 percent on creditors paid within 30 days, expenditures matches budget and activities are performing against target. Tier 1 indicators help hospital monitor closely the indicators that directly impact on funding. The achievement of zero waitlist measure suggested hospital have use the resources effectively and efficiently activity (Dong 2015). This suggests the hospital is fully utilising of resources from staff to pharmacy and equipments activity (Damian Everhart et al. 2013). The analysis of performance indicators will suggest the area of failing in making satisfactory progress. In this scenario, the activity is not cost efficient and hospital will need to review the underlying cost for higher cost in service. Management intervention to improve scenario To improve the scenario, hospital may train personnel to understand the financial information in health care setting (Britt, Adams Snow 2015). Health informatics may create reports that include balance score cards and key performance indicators (KPI). The report should include more information and create better understanding in a bigger picture. A monthly and quarterly reporting frequently increase will also health managers a better comparison (Zelman et al. 2013). Report will provide more informative and real time information to monitor outcome and take actions to respond to negative variance. Educations to staff on the impact to the hospital from the performance are also important to strength and gain support from staff to changes implemented. Each department may provide data to represent their workload intensity and resources such as patient days, weighted activity and cost. Manager will have a better view by streams to better manager, monitor, utilise better resources and achiev e accurate forecast. (iv) Implication on organisations financials on liquidity and cash flow Small business creditors paid within 30 days refers to 30 days from receipt of correctly rendered invoice (Zelman et al. 2013). Currently in the scenario with a performance of 60% against the target is not performance and not acceptable. The positive side of paying creditors longer than 30 days will increase the cashflow and more buffers on liquidity. The less invoices to be finalise, the more flexibility the cash flow will be. Negative impact will be the cashflow is not reflective to the real situation. Where the actual amount of money the hospital has is not reflective as there are still many debts to be paid. On top of that, losing credit is a huge intangible cost. You may have more flexibility of the cash flow but you create a deficit position to the debtor (Zelman et al. 2013). Firstly, the debt may incur interest on the amount hospital own to other creditors. The interest will create financial burden on the next round of financial statement which increase unnecessary cost and accumulate onto the total health care cost. Secondly, losing credit can lead to losing hospital market and interrupted normal business practices. For example, pharmaceutical company will no longer accept accrual basic method of payment and require hospital to pay upfront for all the medicine provided. This will increase financial and cash flow burden, as well as decrease the ability to better forecast expenditures, with a tighter budget and less flexibility in allocating resources. Management intervention to improve scenario Hospital will need to review the current practice and identify issue why the payment cannot be paid within 30 days (State Government of Victoria 2017). Hospital will need to contact the small business creditor, discuss the problem and dealing with any disputes (State Government of Victoria 2017). If the hospital has difficulties in cash flow for the payment, hospital will need to communicate and negotiate the payment days and terms. Extend any invoice day or revise the invoice day to when product receive instead or order receive days to allow more flexibility in cashflow in order to achieve the target. There are always linkage in activity performance and financial budget. It is always important to regularly monitor financial performance and hospital activity performance to ensure hospital is achieving target within budget (NSW Health 2016). Perform regular monitor of activity will support hospital to identify any error and issue associated with lost, that enable to fix the problem and achieve hospital objective and goals. My Decision :: Essays Papers

My Decision As the three o'clock bell rang, a sense of excitement filled the air. I ran with my friends through the cluttered hallways and scurried onto the bus. The seats were filled with bouncing children preparing to go home. Many waved to their teachers as the buses departed. I had anticipated this moment for so long--I was officially a second grader. The last day of first grade had arrived, and I had the remainder of summer to enjoy and have fun. I couldn't wait to get home and begin my vacation. The bus finally rolled quietly around a corner and stopped at my house--the last stop. My mother was standing at the door waiting for me. She smiled and causally took my bag. I didn't even have to ask for permission to go to a friends house, my mom simply said to be home by dark. I walked only a short distance to where my friend, Maggie, was waiting. It seemed odd that we were such good friends. She was pretty and popular, and I was simple and somewhat shy. The differences however made a perfect match. The times of fun and laughter between us were countless. A majority of my summer was guaranteed to be spent running around with this close friend. Soon, however, darkness was drawing in, and I reluctantly said good-bye to my friend and headed for home. The porch light was the first thing I could see of my house. The light was such a brilliant white. I loved how it illuminated its surroundings. A sense of security overwhelmed me when I saw this light, for my mother always turned it on until I had safely returned home. I walked up the steps to the front door. When I stepped inside, I was bombarded with the wonderful aroma of a home-made meal. I could see my mother working in the kitchen. She looked up from her masterpiece and welcomed me home. "Did you have fun?" "Of course", I replied. "We made a lot of plans for the summer." "That's good." "Don't you want to know what we're going to do?" "Not really, I feel that you are old enough to make good judgments. As long as you use your head, are reasonable, and are being safe, I don't mind what you do." I looked at my mother with a blank stare for a moment. I was totally confused. "Do you mean that I can do anything that I want to?

Delegation :: essays research papers

Delegation Authority is legitimized power. Power is the ability to influence others effectively. Delegation is the distribution of authority. Delegation frees the manager to use his or her time on higher priority issues and activities. Although it frees a manager up, it does not free him or her up from the accountability for the actions and decisions of the people below him. That is why the manager must have qualified people underneath him so the actions or decisions that are actually made are along the guidelines that are established for the company or organization. The objective of delegation is to get the job done by someone else. In order to have someone else do the job for you, you must ensure that the person whom you are giving power to understands what you want, have the authority to achieve it, and that they know how to do it. These skills are essential when you are about to hand out orders. These all depend upon communicating clearly the nature of the task, the extent of their discretion, and the sources of relevant information and knowledge. I know at FedEx Ground, I can hop on our intranet and get help on a wide variety of things, such dispatching and changing schedules. For a manager, one thing he or she can delegate that should cause no problems are matters that keep repeating themselves. For example, I am in charge of dropping off the nightly deposits for FedEx C.O.D.’s at the end of the night. This is not hard, but why should the terminal manager do it. Another thing a manager can delegate is the part of a job that makes the one delegating way over specialized. This helps getting other people more involved with the operation, and it also helps people learn things that they do not know how to do yet. This also works the other way. If the one delegating has not done something in a long time, he can pass it off to someone that has worked in that department or who knows what they are doing pretty well. As I mentioned before, I work at FedEx Ground. We have a terminal manager in the building that the managers from the different departments report to. The terminal manager then reports to the upper management in the regional offices, and it goes all the way up the ladder finally to the headquarters in Pittsburgh.

Early Onset Anorexia Essay -- Eating Disorders Health Nutrition Essays

Early Onset Anorexia In recent years, it seems that the public has begun to pay more attention to eating disorders. This trend could be a consequence of the heightened nutrition and fitness craze that the 1990's has brought about, or possibly a result of more intense and conclusive research studies. More clearly defined definitions of anorexia and bulimia in the DSM-IV may also have contributed to better diagnosis of eating disorders. Anorexia nervosa is a disorder that in the majority of cases will start when the patient is a teenager. The mean age at onset is figured to be about 17 years of age. The distribution of cases appears 'to be asymmetrical with a skewness towards the higher ages (Theander, 1996). Recently, child psychiatrists have begun to recognize increasing cases beginning in childhood (McCune & Walford, 1991). While refusal to eat and loss of weight are common symptoms in child psychiatric practices, similarities between these anoretic states and the syndrome of anorexia nervosa are slight (Hawley, 1985). While severity of illness is usually associated with worse outcome, age of onset for anorexia can play a critical role in future outcome. Premenarcheal anorexia nervosa has serious implications for the progress of puberty which may in turn, have detrimental effects on the youngsters (Bryant-Waugh, Fosson, Knibbs, & Lask, 1987). It is important that pediatricians, psychiatrists, educators, and parents are able to identify this disorder at early ages. The purpose of the following sections of this paper are to help familiarize readers with signs and symptoms which may aid in identification of anorexia leading to an early diagnosis. English Commentary – Maiden Voyage

The prescribed passage, Maiden Voyage from Denton Welch’s novel is rich in action and suspense. Several literary devices are employed by the author to create such an appealing effect. The first person narrative is introduced in the first line of this passage and is very important throughout the prose, especially when the protagonist encounters the decapitated head. The narrative style enhances the sensations of utter surprise and horror by describing the experience in a more personal viewpoint. Simple descriptions such as â€Å"I stared into its raw eye-sockets until waves of sickness spread over me. Then I ran’’ enhances the disgust of the scene for the reader, and such feelings can only by the protagonist, which is why first-person view-point is made very effective here. The setting plays a big role in this passage, especially in the lines leading up the climax point of discovering the head. Welch describes everything as being ‘’still and silent,’’ and along with the aid of the line ‘’ Harsh spears of grass stuck up through the sand. The soles of my shoes began to burn and I looked round vainly for some shady place. ’’ the reader begins to envision a serene but hot afternoon setting, although this slowly alters towards the eerie when it is revealed that the wind is the only sound. It gives the impression that as if the place is deserted. Mr Welch also spends considerable time describing the setting of the house that the protagonist was staying in before leaving to venture outside. There is sense of confinement as if the protagonist is trapped in the house and is being held back against his own will thus the word – ‘’imprisonment,’’ . The contents of the house is simple for example ‘’moth-eaten’’ worn out balls and the â€Å"old tennis racket† were the only objects lying in the hall for entertainment. The sombre setting as described by Mr Welch would allow the reader to understand the ardent desire of the protagonist to leave the villa and explore the surroundings. Welch’s usage of diction is also very successful in this passage. By describing the flies as with the simile ‘’buzzing like dynamos,’’ Welsh enhances the disgust the protagonist encountered at the scene. When the protagonist finally realises what the object that appeared to cat crouching in the middle of the road actually was, Welch describes the protagonist reaction as awaking (‘’my numbed senses suddenly awoke again’’), This gives the impression that she is shocked by how only then she realised what the object really was, hence the line â€Å"I stared into its raw eye-sockets until waves of sickness spread over me. Then I ran†. However, the words used to describe the decapitated head stand out the most in this passage, as they are well applied to convey repulsion. ’Shrivelled lips,’’ ‘’ coarse hairs growing out of its ears,’’ ‘’raw eye-sockets’’ as well as the simile ‘’old white teeth stood up like ninepins in the dark’’ all portray intense repulsion, to the extent of invoking nausea to the reader. The shock to the reader upon the revelation that t he object is a human head is heightened by the fact that the protagonist initially thought it was a cat lying in the middle of the road which to the actual object seems to be a contrasting and innocent suggestions. After seeing the head the protagonist decides to run for safety along the bare hills maybe he has realised the meaning of the line Mr Butler said earlier – ‘’Foreigners are not very popular here, so I don’t think you ought to go out alone. ’’ This would enhance the sense of peril towards the protagonist herself, thus making him suddenly fear for his life. The irony in the final passages is clearly evident. The protagonist wants nothing more than to return to the house (‘’my only idea was to get back to the house’’) however, not too long ago she was desperate to leave the house. There is suspense at the end of the passage as the protagonist still feels in harm’s way as he turns desperate in his attempt to find safety (â€Å"I began to feel desperate†). This is also emphasised by the short sentence ‘’I was wondering if I could climb up to it in any way. I knew that I could not. ’’ This passage is effectively portrayed by Denton Welch to entice the reader to immerse the reader into the story. The reader is provided with the means to do this by first-person narrative, ample descriptions to depict the scenario, as well as the usage of various literary tools.

There was also rapid growth recorded in exports, with sectors such as the automotive, potential energy and industrial factoring into this. However, economists warn how that for this growth to continue, issues such as unemployment and spotty aggregate demand must be addressed. It is an interesting science, even if it isnt an exact science.Fiscal policy generally concerns itself with creating conditions of full employment, price stability and real GDP growth. Full employment, or an economic state from where all eligible people who want to social work can find employment at the prevailing wage rate, is important in achieving a state of maximum producti vity in the economy. The direct current unemployment rate is 8.2%, above the generally accepted natural rate of unemployment. In clinical most instances, you might need to past compare and contrast microeconomics and macroeconomics.

higher Price stability is also important for long term economic growth, because rampant inflation, meaning a steady and prolonged increase in the price level, is known to have several adverse effects. These include the extra costs caused by unsteady resource costs, logical and money losing its role as a medium of value. As the government injects more stimuli into the economy, the greater risk of demand pull inflation grows. Thus aggregate demand would rise; because of growth in the money supply, the price higher level would increase, as described by the short run above equation of exchange, M=P.Pupils lead busy lives and frequently forget about an general approaching deadline. Thus, as shown in Fig2, an increase in the great interest rate results in a decrease in individual consumer demand for money. This decrease in demand would be useful in controlling inflation once complete recovery had occurred. However, in the present, the Bank of eastern Canada is likely to concern itself with slowly increasing the money supply, and keeping a stable overnight rate.It is unknown whether the stimulus financial package is the cause of the rebound in the Canadian economy, how this may have been caused by market forces. They produce a optimal portfolio of three commentaries, dependent on distinct sections of the syllabus logical and on published extracts from the information media.

Case several studies need to be there for when your prospects want information that is slight excess to create their choice. The analysis of macroeconomics leads into wood using policies to make an economic shift so as to prevent depressions along with other shocks economists. Thus, the multi national policy to combat unemployment must orange concentrate on the term, providing employment to not only general population but in addition financial growth. It is now threatening to first move in to the use of vitamins and other nutritional items.

If a business is not hearty their customers consistently they get out in the end lose those customers and ultimately lose the business altogether. look into has shown that customer felicity surveys are essential for round-the-clock mendment of product, emoluments, and/or support, as well as first look fighting and excerpt, (e abide by Pro, 2013).In sanctify to continue and improve their level of overhaul and expiation it is i mportant that symmetrical customer ecstasy surveys be conducted. performing incessant surveys allows for the high society to list any problems, develop strategies and to gear up those ends in motion. erst the improvements have been in place it would be near to conduct other survey that could aegir how those changes have modify business.
